This website collects visual design work by Richard Ballermann. Each project explores how typography, color, grids, imagery, and interaction can shape a clear and memorable experience. This is the evidence locker: design work by Richard Ballermann, assembled from type, color, grids, imagery, and thousands of tiny decisions made while sensible people were already asleep. The objective was clarity. The method occasionally looked criminal.Richard Ballermann makes design. He uses words, colors, pictures, and boxes to make things clear, easy to remember, and good to look at.I have assembled here a selection of my design work. In each project, type, colour, order, image, and interaction are expected to perform their duties with clarity, while retaining enough character to deserve remembrance. Here I have gathered the work of many paths. Type and color, grid and image, motion and interaction are bound with purpose, so each project may be understood clearly and remembered after the page has passed. This website contains my design work, which is why it is called a portfolio. I use typography, color, grids, images, and interaction. Those are the ingredients. The experience is the meal, except you do not eat it. You remember it.I have assembled my design work here for your review. Typography, color, structure, imagery, and interaction have each been considered. You may examine the projects in any order. Their intended meaning will remain clear.
The work ranges from product and web design to identity systems. Every project begins with shared foundations, then adapts those parts to its own audience and purpose.Product, web, identity—the scenery changes and somebody always arrives with a new acronym, but the method holds: start with sound parts, interrogate every assumption, and bend the system toward the people condemned to use it.The work is apps, websites, and brands. They start with the same good parts. Then the parts change so they work for the right people. Happy people is goal.My work ranges from products and websites to systems of identity. Each begins with sound principles, then assumes the particular form best suited to its audience. A system ought not impose upon those obliged to use it.My work crosses products, websites, and identities. I begin each upon firm foundations, then shape it for the people it must serve. No system should become its own master. Purpose must guide it to the end.I design products, websites, and brands. Different outputs, same foundations. A foundation is what everything stands on. Without one, the design falls over metaphorically, and sometimes literally if it is a sign.I work across products, websites, and identity systems. Each begins with the same disciplined foundation. I then adapt it to its audience and purpose. The system will not ask people to accommodate its limitations.
